Does Magic Mouse need mouse pad?

I just bought a Magic Mouse, which I'm using on a MBP. The tracking with this thing is terrible. I installed Mouse Zoom and that helped a lot. But it still isn't accurate. It takes a little fidgeting to get the mosue right where I want to click. I have the mouse on a desktop surface with no mouse pad. It looks to be a laser mouse but does it require a mouse pad?

I have a wired Microsoft laser mouse on the same desktop surface connected to a PC. It works perfectly. I'd think the Magic Mouse can outperform the Microsoft Mouse.

Mine is a polished dark wood surface (cherrywood, I believe.) It works quite well with laser mice. Light colored surfaces or see-through surfaces may not work well.

The Mighty Mouse also won't work well with nearly dead batteries or a bottom cover that's not properly seated. Otherwise, I've never had any problems with mine.
