I think I am seeing this too. Just been out for a walk for 40 mins with iPhone5 playing, synced the phone and it is showing 28 mins of music played.
Also had a smartlist called "unplayed" which I spent most of the summer listening too and cleared while on holiday in September. Now showing 182 tracks, 12 hours+ of unlistened too music.
I know this is wrong.
I am struggling with the same problem? I had a song that had a play count of 47. This morning I opened iTunes and the play count had been reset to 0. Everyone is saying it's a "crossfade" issue but in our case its not the crossfade, its a more serious problem.
Definitely not a cross fade problem, some of these are tracks have been played a lot. I played the new Muse album continuously for weeks after it was released - the whole album was showing as 0, even though it was showing last played date 3 weeks ago. An album I played during the summer is showing last played dates in June but zero play count.
Hopefully Apple can get this figured out. Very disappointing from Apple, seems their standard is dropping across the board.
This is a problem that seems to be endemic to "purchased" songs only, rather than songs downloaded from a CD or from youtube.
Well spotted - hadn't seen that, checked where I can and it does only look like purchased counts
Lost 1212 play counts out of 51141 songs. Most, but not all, purchased.

Thank you for the feedback. In a way its a relief to know its not just my iTunes, but its also a huge disappointment that Apple is having so many issues. Hopefully someone from Apple actually reads these and a fix is coming!
Looks like all my lost playcounts are from purchased songs.
I am having the same problem, but not only with purchased songs. Sometimes it will update the play count when I listen to a song, sometimes it won't. This problem started when I upgraded to iTunes '11.
I have a few smart playlists that automatically update based on playcounts so this is screwing this all up. Very annoying.
Replying to myself here - just discovered the "turn crossfade off" solution. Obvs I would prefer that iTunes work the way it is supposed to, but this will do for now.
I've got the same issue. Some songs on my playlist (on my computer--haven't checked my ipods play counts) seem to have been randomly reset, while others haven't. I'll have to check and see if it only purchased songs. What do people mean when they say it's a crossfade issue? I'm afraid I have no idea what the term crossfade refers to.
Go to iTunes prefrences and un check crossfade option in play back this will solve most of the problem as long as you stay away from the cloud and iTunes match

Hmm--cross fade doesn't seem to be checked, so that doesn't seem to be the reason for my problem with this.
It is not a cross fade issue. The cross fade issue is if you are listening to a song through your iTunes library and at the end of the song the play count doesn't update. The issue that we have is randomly play counts are being deleted. Looks like for the most part its songs purchased through the iTunes store. On a positive note its been a couple weeks since any of my playcounts have been deleted.
Maybe Apple does listen?
I thought I had fixed this problem previously by turning off the crossfade, but today when I opened my iTunes, there were 293 songs I know had previously been heard that now show play counts of 0. Very frustrating, as I use the play count for my playlists. I've been an Apple gal for years now. I'm hoping they fix this glitch soon.
