what itunes version will work with a first generation ipod mini

My wife has a first generation iPod mini and wants to use it but the version of iTunes that she has on her computer will not recognize it.

Anyone know what she can do to be able to use this perfectly good device?

What was the last iTunes version to sync with this device?
