Why can't Apple fix my iPad screen?

I bought an iPad five months ago. I had it in a case and a woman in Penn Station somehow managed to flip a chair crushing my backpack and causing a crack. In any case, I called Apple and explain the situation. I was told by the rep on the phone that I could have my screen replaced for about $100 or so and to take it to my local Apple store. I made an appointment at Genius Bar to be told they don't fix screens and I'd have to pay $300 to get it replaced. I'm just wondering why the screen can't be fixed by Apple but other places can fix it. I'd also like to know why I need to spend $300 to replace it OR get it fixed elsewhere for a lot cheaper and void my warranty because Apple doesn't want to fix the screen

A refurb iPad has a new screen and battery, and a new back.

Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.

Out-of-Warranty Service

If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.

iPad model Out-of-Warranty Service Fee
iPad mini $219
iPad 3rd, 4th generation $299
iPad 2, iPad $249

A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in US dollars and are subject to local tax.

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPad that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service. See http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad

Apple has apparently decided that it is more cost-effective and efficient for them to replace defective or damaged devices rather than repairing an individual's unit. That's just the way it is, and it's not uncommon in the industry for this class of electronic device.

In any case, the reasons don't matter. You can either pay the replacement charge, or use a third-party repair service and void all further support from Apple. Your choice.

The screen isn't just a piece of glass laid on top of the device, it's connected to sensors and the such and isn't just a 'pop a new one in' kind of repair. In fact, the downside of the iPads in general is that they're not modular like laptops, stuff literally has to be done in a factory setting. Which is why they can't just replace it for you.

That $300 is really a fee to replace your iPad for a refurbished one. they then probably send yours back to the factory to have it refurbished or its parts recycled.

it's totally no fun, I know, but just how it is.

If you do choose unauthorized third party repair, doing so will void your warranty.
