iPhone SMS and data issue

I got a new iPhone 5, and when inside my house, I get a single bar of 4g. It have to hit the try again an average of 4 times for it to send. The same problem occours on 4 and 5 bars, but I notice that immediatley after it says Try Again I receive a text. I think the problem might be an incomeing text is preventing the outgoing one from sending. Also, when on 1 bar of 4G, the data connection appears not to work. The safari has the blue bar, but the wepage never loads and the blue bar never moves. Any help is greatly appreciated🙂

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Remove and reinstall the SIM.

Replace the SIM.

Contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network issues.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

I think the problem might be the SIM, because after i turned of Wi-FI, I could see the type of network it was connecting to. I noticed it right from 4G to EDGE, and it bypasses the strong 3G signal I have in my house. Now that I think about it, I have noticed that I have never recieved a 3G signal on my iPhone 5. And now the problem has intensified, and the phone says "No Sim", even though the SIM is clearly in the phone. After I tried to reset the phone to factory defaults, It wouldn't allow me access to the phone because apparantly a SIM is needed to activate it. Do you think the problem might be in the phone itself, and not the SIM, because I already received a replacement one from AT&T? How would I go about acquiring a replacement iPhone?

And it is unlikely you ever will see "3G" displayed on a 4S or 5. AT&T classifies their HSPA+ network as 4G and got Apple to update iOS to reflect "4G" whenever connected to this network. The vast majority of AT&T's 3G network has been upgraded to HSPA+. The iPhone 5 will display LTE when connected tot he LTE network.

Has the SIM actually been replaced? If it has and the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

So I finally got my replacement iPhone and it has the same issues as the old one.

Was the new phone setup as a new phone or restored from a backup of the old phone?

If it was not setup as a new phone, restore and setup as a new phone. Do not restore the backup.

is it Abnormal to go straight from 4G signal directly to EDGE?

As has already been explained, it is extremely unlikely that a 4S or 5 will ever display the 3G logo on AT&T's network, so yes, it is expected that the device will switch from 4G to EDGE as needed.
