My mac will not burn an image or tex to a cd or dvd disk. I did a hardware check and that came back o k. When I hit burn to disk the drive works for about 3 mins. and then stops and ejects the d*** disc* saying there was an error. disk burn cannot be re started. Any Ideas?

What model iMac, as OS version are you using? From the Apple Menu, About this Mac, what version OS does it say? Click the More Info button, what does the Model Identifier say?
Are you using an internal CD/DVD drive, or an external drive? Will the drive read a CD/DVD?

My os is version 10.8.2 .It is an internal CD/Dvd drive. It will work when I put in a music cd or a dvd but will not burn on to a blank disk
This particular forum is dedicated to older non-intel-based iMacs, which can't run OS 10.8. You might have better luck re-asking your question in this forum:

But I suggest the following:
Try opening Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility> Repair Disk Permissions.
