Yes, pretty much so, because of the modern design of having everything packed in tight, coupled with the fast CPU's of modern machines, they can run quite hot.
This can be observed when using data continuously as with a game, and also just with modest usage once room temperature reaches mid 30 degrees C.
I'd say the aluminium body is to some extent a heat radiator, and yes, it can get too hot to touch. I sometimes wonder what impact this has on internal components.

More than likely yes. Games put a huge strain on computer hardware. You should try to vacuum out the vents on the top and bottom of your iMac to make sure that there is proper air flow. When it gets hot do you hearthe fans speed up? You can also get a utility called iStat Pro to find out just how hot it's getting.
i cleand out the vent it wasnt very dirty. the cpu got up to 162 degres only playing about 30min of the game. the fan went from 1199 to 1530 rpm. my other qustion is what temp is too hot?
Yes. Get a Xbox 360 for gaming. Macs are for Productivity.
When your computer gets to hot it will shut down. Your numbers after playing a game for 30 minutes are about right and isn't putting to much strain on your computer.
In the summer months I have seen my iMac get above 180. If I'm compress a HD video and using all of my cores my fans kick in at over 2000 rpms.
The above image the iMac is not really doing anything... nothing to worry about. I've never had my iMac shut down from being to hot.
thanks for the info david
