The optical drive has probably failed. It's a fairly common thing with these slim SuperDrives. Does it read any discs you put into it? You can try resetting the SMC and pram but I'll be surprised if it helps.

To reset the SMC

Shut down the computer.

Unplug the computer's power cord.

Wait fifteen seconds.

Attach the computer's power cord.

Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

Shut down the computer.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

I ran into the same issue with the same iMac about 6 months back and couldt figure out what was goign on. So I ordered one of those CD/DVD Cleaners, basically a disc with smal brushes on them. I't did the trick and havent had an issue since. I used the Memorex brand disc cleaner of off of ebay. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008EM7U/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

Hope this helps.

Well I bought a disk cleaner and used it acording to directions. I was able to record once and then not at all. But I was still able to play dvd's and music cd's. I felt ther might be a software problem so I re installed I photo and the latest updates and was able to burrn to disk a number of times. There are still some bugs in the system but I think I am on the right track. thank you all for your help.

Mine worked for awhile then tottaly stopped working. I ended up taking it to the geniuses to have them llok at it and give me a quote, plus I was having software issues. They ended up replacing the drive without my authorization, so when I came to pick it up I had a $150 bill when it was just in for a diagnosis. Well they didnt end up charging me for their mistake and I got a new drive. I dont use it much but when I do it's a drag not being able to use it when it was broken. I do noticed the new drive is a little louder than the orginal but work perfect.

Good luck OLDONE
