Okay, so I happened to be looking through a smart playlist I have of unplayed music and I noticed that a handful of albums that I've purchased from iTunes have had the play counts for each song erased. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that this would have something to with iCloud, as I recently updated to iTunes 11. Why did this happen? Is there any way to restore the play counts? (Apart from restoring a backup prior to the iTunes upgrade)

I am having the same problem. Looks like it happens with songs purchased from the iTunes store. Wish I had an answer for you. Hopefully Apple will address this problem soon!
I agree as I am having same problem with iTunes 11. The upgrade did not help. APPLE WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS???
Okay, I found an iTunes script that allows you to easily fix the play counts. It's better than nothing until Apple gets around to fixing the issue.
