Will Apple replace my iPhone 5, even though I dropped it by accident?

Today I had it on the counter and it dropped on the top right side of the phone and dented it. I know it's not covered by the warranty because I dropped it and I can't return it to Sprint because I bought it in September. Is it true that Apple replaces them for $149? If they do replace it, will it be refurbished? But my friend told me that he threw his iphone 3gs and apple replaced it for free no questions asked, and that's why I'm asking.
