Q: Why can't I verify or repair disk permissions?

In recent weeks, when I have tried to verify or repair disk permissions, I get messages that say (whatever file) has been altered and will not be repaired.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

So you can run a Verify and a Repair but it returns an error about one or more files not being able to be repaired. That is totally normal. What is wrong with your Mac that made you run the Verify and Repair.

I have been told to verify and repair permissions after installing new software. I had upgraded several things, and my computer was being very sluggish and difficult. A nice Apple employee told me to upgrade the memory, and that made things run much smoother.

I just wondered why I could suddenly no longer verify or repair anything.

Not sure where you got that info, and or who told you that, but it is not needed.

If you find the system isn't running properly and you have to Verify and repair permissions or Disk on a regular basis then there is a hardware problem with your Mac.

Normally neither of those things are needed. The Mac should run for years without doing either of those things.

That is not what you said in an earlier post. you said you got some errors that certain files could not be repaired. That is Not the same as I Can't Repair Anything. Certain files not having the permissions repaired is Normal. It happens on every Mac.
