I have a new MacBook Pro and want to plug it into one of my iMac's. Not to have up on the screen at the sametime but purely to utilise the bigger screen.

Only a 27-inch iMac or a Mac with a Thunderbolt port can be used as a monitor, so if you don't have this iMac, you can't use your iMac as a monitor. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469
