Aperture exports versions in random order

I'm running Aperture 3.4.1.

When I import photos from sports events (usually 500-700 per project), I rate them and then use a smart album to select the highest rated ones I want to publish.

The photos are in the smart album in sequential order (based on the filenames created by the camera).

I then select all of the photos in the smart album and choose File > Export > Versions...

My export settings are as follows:

Export Preset: JPEG - Original Size

Subfolder Format: None

Custom Subfolder Name: <blank>

Name Format: Custom Name with Counter

Custom Name: 121207-VGB (which stands for the date and name of the event)

However, once the photos have been exported to a folder, I find that they are not in the order in which they are in Aperture. For a sports event (especially basketball where the teams switch ends at the half), this makes the order of the photos quite confusing.

This is only a recent problem - Aperture did not used to behave this way, and I can't think of a setting I might have changed.

In general, I am exporting between 40-60 photos at a time.

Anyone have any ideas about why this would be happening or what I can do to stop it? The only workaround I have found is to export the photos one Aperture "row" at a time (about 13 photos). Only then do they export in the correct order. I'd rather not have to do this all the time!

You have to make sure, that the primary selection is the first image in the selected range of images that you are exporting; otherwise the numbering will start with the primary selection, and not with the first image in the browser.

For example: The primary selection in the browser (the actively selected image in the browser with the thicker frame) is the fourth image, but the numbering will be as you are seeing in the viewer.

Thanks for the suggestions. It appears that for OS 10.7.5, Aperture 3.4.1 is the latest version, at least according to the Software Update I just ran.

I made sure that the primary selection in my Aperture browser was my first image, and then I tried to export 48 photos from a basketball game. That export still resulted in the exported photos being in a different order than the way they are in Aperture.

Here is how the first few appear in Aperture:

Notice that the one I've highlighted in red is not the second photo in the sequence, yet it appears second once the photos have been exported:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying but again the order that my images are in in the viewer and/or browser is the order that they get exported in regardless of where the primary selection is.

I have only sen this in the latest version (or never noticed before). The Viewer displays the selection beginning with the primary selection, while the browser is still displaying the manual sort order.

And the images are exported in the order I see in the Viewer.

I prefer the way it is behaving for you and I am hoping what I see on my system, is a bug in Aperture 3.4.3. You said you are using 3.4.2, right? So maybe it is the lates version that is behaving strangely. I'll check later on my second MBP.

Frank, how are you selecting the "Primary selection"? For me the result depends on how the images are selected in the browser - split view only:

  1. When I select one image in the browser - not the first image in the album - and display it in the browser, and then, with this image still selected, do a "select all", then Aperture will add the following images behind the first selected image in the Viewer.
  2. When I first select all and then change the primary selection, the Viewer will reflect the Browser sequence.

And option one results in the images exported as seen in the Viewer, not the Browser.

Could you please test that, if you have time?

Léonie can you confirm thst the OP cannot run the latest 3.4.3 on Lion? I thought Lion and ML were the same and that the difference was onlty with SL and L/ML.

No, that had me puzzled too. The support download page says

Version: 3.4.3

System Requirements

OS X Lion 10.7.5

OS X 10.8.2 or later

see: Aperture 3.4.3

Perhaps LondonColin has tried to install from the wrong update source or signed into the AppStore with the wrong AppleID? Unless the iMac is for some reason not suitable for the latest Aperture - Graphics Cards, available disk space, or memory?

LondonColin, did you buy Aperture from the AppStore, or a boxed retail version?

Okay - updating to 3.4.3 seemed to fix the problem.

I could, in fact, update to 3.4.3, but I still can't get used to checking the App Store for updates for software. I'm so used to just checking the Software Update feature that I forget that it's really only used for OS software now. Léonie's question about whether I might have been signed into the App Store under a different ID flipped the switch for me.

Thanks for your help.

You can assign your own custom key shortcuts:

Aperture > Commands > Customize

Inthe upper left corner of this panel is a switch to selct a command set. Duplicate the current set to create your own custom set.

Then select "Add Missing Face" in the command list and enter a keyboard shortcut. I tried and assigned ⌥⌘F, it worked!

But it is hard to find shortcuts, that are not yet taken. You may have to sacrifice one of the current shortcuts and reassign it to the commnads yiu really need.

LondonColin,

It seems to me that the way you SELECT images in Aperture determines the order in which they will be exported.
What I see is that many people select images by pulling their mouse from e.g. right-below to top-left. So the first image selected is the the one the mouse encounters first and is the one right-below. When you give the exported files a counter, then that one will get 1. And so on.
What works is this:
- select e.g. your album in Aperture
- arrange the images the way you want e.g. by Date
- make sure no image is selected
- from the menu choose Select All (or Cmd-a)
Now when you export with a counter, the files are numbered in the exact order you have chosen for them in Aperture.

Does this help?
