Unsupported disc message -- DVD Player

I've burned an iDVD movie using two different brands 2x Ritek and 6x Ridata
4.7 - RW discs. I also tried my external LaCie firewire player -- with the same resutls.

DVD player does not recognize either of them.

As a test, I did try these discs on my friend's older iMac, and they played okay.
I trashed the DVD preferences file, and repaired permission, but no help there, either.

Thanks for the advice.

Being new to iDVD, I find this a bummer as the iDVD getting started manual states that DVD-RW is a compatible medium--I bought two spindles.

But this issue still begs the question. Why do these discs play on my friend's two year old iMac, but not on the drive that created it?

By the way, help view for iDVD6 on my machine doesn't work properly either -- I get "page not found" when I click on one the categories on the left pane -- where it says for example, how to customize buttons.

I had that too. Geez, how did I fix that...? Take a peek at this:

Why would you pay "extra" for DVD-RW? Try to get your money back.

Might take a peek at this too:
General specifications and requirements for iDVD

Where it says: DVD-R is the recommended disc format to use for projects that can fit on a single-layer disc.

Same problems--no solution. If I burn a DVD, I can't play it with DVD Player on any Mac, though I have been successful in playing it with VLC ogg and also on a PC with Windows Media Player (though some PC mark it as an unknown disk).

I appreciate the note from another user about using DVD-R (but Apple says the others are compatible).

What speed Verbatim DVD-R do you recommend?

It's not so much the speed rated as it is the burn speed. 4X or slower seems to be best.

This is where I've bought Verbatim. Take your pick:

But you can find them at Office Depot and Best Buy.
