For Thunderbird 17, what should my outgoing server settings be?

I am using OS X 10.8.2 and Thunderbird 17. Checking my outgoing server settings against what Apple suggests SSL/TLS with port 587. When I select SSL/TLS my port defaults to 465. To get port 587, I have to select STARTTLS. Does any of this really matter? It seems to work okay for me with it st to STARTTLS/587. Any comments?
