(1) Apple stopped offering its external iSight several years ago. If the old external iSight you have/get still works, it should work with your Mac mini.
However, if you are buying now, I'd recommend a new compatible USB cam that offers a current manufacturer's warranty instead of any external iSight. Some examples of current compatible cams are described at http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

(2) If you decide to try an external iSight with a FW800 mini, you will need a Firewire 400-800 cable or adapter to connect the FW400 external iSight. Apple currently offers this adapter: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW748LL/A/

Yes, but each app you use with external iSight's mic has its own menu command(s) that control the mic. Different apps work differently.
If you have trouble, search each problem app's Help for specific assistance.

No. All software needed for external iSight function is automatically installed with every version of Mac OS X after 10.4.8.
