Deleting files completely on sticks

Hi,

When I delete files from a USB stick or portable drive, they are gone, but the space is not recoverd. This means I need to go to Disk Utility to erase the disk and recover the space. Is there a quicker way to do this? Perhaps an Info setting?

TIA

The space is being returned, it has to be. But Finder may not be updating itself or you still need to Empty the Trash can to completely get rid of them. Make sure you empty the trash then close the finder window and open a new one. Space should be there.
