Installation of Safari for Windows 5.1.7 fails

I have been setting up a new PC with Windows 7 (64-bit Home Premium). I have gotten QuickTime (32-bit) 7.7.3 and iTunes (64-bit) 10.6.3.25 installed apparently successfully (at least, iTunes works). But the Safari for Windows 5.1.7 installer gives the error message "This installer is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows. Please obtain the 64-bit installer from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html." and will not finish. I downloaded and apparently successfully installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows 2.0.2, but Safari still will not install. Does anyone have advice about how to get past that error?

From what source did you get Safari for Win? It's possible that some third-party archive might not have the latest version.

I recently installed Win7/64/HP in my iMac i7 using Boot Camp and had no trouble with this Safari version that is on Apple's web site:

Safari 5.1.7 for Windows

Is that the one you used?

As for where to post, most SafariWin users post here and you've already figured out the best way to do it: put the word "Windws" in the post title. That will get the the attention of Win uses who help out here.

Allan, thanks for that suggestion. However, that is exactly where I downloaded the installer that I used. I have found suggestions elsewhere on the Web, in response to a similar symptom but not the cause, that certain Apple software needs to be installed in a certain order. And if it isn't working, it needs to be uninstalled in a certain order and then reinstalled in a certain order. In my case, my guess is that installing iTunes 10.6.3 prior to the latest Safari might be causing this symptom. But that's only speculation, and I'll wait for responses before uninstalling and reinstalling next weekend.

I started trying to follow the advice given here to uninstall various Apple software for Windows:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3287035

(which was for a different symptom, however). I encountered a couple of problems in trying to do so. The "Uninstall or change a progam" Control Panel shows two versions of Apple Mobile Device Support: 3.3.0.69 and 5.2.0.6. I tried to uninstall the older one. The uninstaller started up but quit, reproducibly, in the middle of the process, so that never got uninstalled. I tried to uninstall Bonjour separately. That did not work, either, as the message related to my failed installation of Safari for Windows came up here: "This installer is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows. Please obtain the 64-bit installer from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html." The installed Bonjour is version 2.0.4.0 with a date of 1/1/2011. (It is conceivable that that got copied over from a Windows XP computer that had it, so it might be a 32-bit version.) I am not sure how to uninstall that Bonjour manually. I could not find a specific 64-bit Bonjour installer here on the Apple Web site, only a Bonjour Print Services installer, which has already been run, so that is installed. (I have found on the Web an old version of 64-bit Bonjour installer, v. 1.0.6, but that would not finish, telling me that a newer Bonjour is installed.) I have found among my backups some copies of files named Bonjour.msi (version 2.0.4.0) in Apple Installer Cache folders. I cannot tell by their appearance if they are 64-bit versions or 32-bit carried over from the XP computer's file transfers. Would it do any good to try to run those directly? (I also see BonjourPS64.msi, but I'm sure that's just the Print Services already installed.) Without more insight into that error message, I may just give up on installing Safari for Windows. I hope I will be able to reinstall QuickTime and iTunes 10.6.3 and iPod support software.

I have worked on this problem a little bit more but with no success. I tried to use Ashampoo UnInstaller 5 to uninstall Bonjour that was installed (which may be the improper 32-bit version). However, UnInstaller 5 only tried to use the Windows uninstallation process. It carried out a command "MsiExec.exe /)({2A98129-H' 14C -4FOF-9627.1J 793270922F8}" which gave the same original error message that it was intended for 32-bit Windows and I needed to obtain a 64-bit installer from a URL that does not offer it. Windows 7's Uninstall Program tries to use a file located at C:\WINDOWS\Installer\285b363d.msi, but that gave the same unsuccessful result. I was luckily able to reinstall Quicktime 7.7.3 and iTunes 10.6.3 successfully. During the iTunes installation, some component must need 64-bit Bonjour, as it gave the same error message as the Safari 5.1.7 installer, but the iTunes installation was able to proceed beyond that. I tried running all the copies of Bonjour.msi that I have, but they are all 32-bit or older versions, so none of them worked. I believe that installing Safari for Windows on this Windows 7 PC will be impossible without instructions for manually uninstalling Bonjour. Fortunately, I don't really need Safari on this PC.
