The scan tab is not available for the printer in preferences. Printing works fine. No updates show to be available from the App Store. Downloaded the drivers directly from HP. Nothing works. Any new suggestions?

Neither Image Capture or Preview recognize that a scanner is attached. I am not presented with an option to scan.
Your profile says you are running 10.6.4.
What model is the printer?
Have you tried deleting the printer and then adding it back?
*blush* updated my profile. I'm actually at 10.8.2. Yes - I have tried deleting and adding back. I've also tried the unplug-wait-plug recommendation and checked App Store for updates.
The printer is a psc-1315v all-in-one. Great printer.... until now. :-)
Have you tried another user account to see if you get the same results?

I just tried from a test account. Same result. Odd, right?
The "Preferences" section is under the "Your Stuff" link - top right hand side of the forum page.

The PSC 1310 no longer support scanning on Mac OS X v10.5 or any newer OS version, not via the HP Software or via Image Capture either, as you may find listed at the bottom of the following document:
The software provided for your model via Apple Software Update only contain Print Drivers and not Scan Drivers as you may find by the following charts (Listed as PSC 1310):

You may try using the 3rd party VueScan scanning software which seems to support your printer and compatible with 10.8:

I still cannot scan from my HP PSC 1310 in 10.8.2.
