Q: MacBook Air Mirroring with Apple TV not working

According to all the specs and requirements, my MacBook Air meets and exceeds the apple tv requirements. The airplay symbol does not appear in the menu bar nor does a tick box in the display config. oddly when I launch itunes the airplay option is available. What am I doing wrong and how can I get my MacBook to work with Apple TV? Any help is greatly appriciated.

Apple TV (3rd generation), iOS 5.1.1

I don't know but there are sometimes free upgrades if you purchase just before new OS are released, it may be worth asking at the store.

iTunes basic airplay function is a separate function from airplay mirroring. Is your Mac up to date?

The OS is 10.7.5. I was told I need to update to 8.0. I tried to find that version and the only one I was able to locate was 8.2. The prereq for 8.2 is 8.0. I also ran software update and its telling me that I'm up to date.

That is your problem, 10.8 is not an update it is a new OS you need to purchase from the App store (OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion).
