cd/dvd-rom drive not working

Yep I tried that, and the credit card one as well, but didn't dare try the paper clip, and also tried hitting the eject button as you reboot. I've been reading the thread "CD won't read and it will NOT ejtect... help" at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=726231&tstart=15

I tried using this utility but the eject button is greyed out, I tried the old Command + E to no avail. I wonder if it has to do with the EFI firmware update 1.1?

Have the same problem - iMac less than one day out of box. Having purchased this as a replacement for a Powerbook with a mother board problem am feeling a little **** off with Apple at this point in time. From the other posts here seems that this is a common issue - why is it not fixed !!

I use the DVD +R to make back-ups only. Maybe Apple is not adressing the issue because iDisk does a better job? Or maybe they have lots more Intel issues to deal with... I love Mac and have little respect for PCs. But frankly when they switched to intel I nearly didn't buy. I still wonder... After I installed the EFI firmware update I started having booting problems which I didn't have before. If it ain't broken don't fix it. I will never update anything from now on.

Took it in and they replaced the Superdrive. Works great!

I have the same problem. iMac 17" Core Duo, worked fine for 11 months then in month 12 it started failing. Will not accept blank DVD media, spins for a wile then ejects it. Accepts CD media, seems to burn OK, but when I insert the burnt disk it says there is nothing on it. Was told by Apple the only way to get it fixed was to pay 200 Euro to extend my Applecare, which I have now done. Have phoned them and, after several phone calls and test sequences they said a Technician will call tommorow... Now getting really ****** with Apple. Stand by your products Apple.

Same issue here. Seems there are a few ppl experiencing the same fault and it's strange that Apple has not rectified it.

I assume the percentage of drive faults is small compared to number of Macs sold but as a very competent PC user who decided to gamble and make the switch to have experienced this in the first few weeks of purchase is disheartening.

Appears that it needs to be taken to AASC. Jut hope that it won't take long to have the drive repaired/replaced.

How long did it take to repair?

I am having the exact same trouble with my brand new 24 inch iMac. The drive WILL however work with SOME DVDs, such as the Tiger install disc.
I was also able to boot into the apple hardware test DVD. (iMac restore DVD1)

I am unable to load/mount most CDs and DVDs when in OSX, and nothing in XP.

My drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K06 - Q609, I've had the iMac two weeks. There is no indication of a bad drive in apple hardware test.

Anyone have any ideas? Given the drive boots perectly normally with some install DVDs, I suspect something has gone wrong in OSX and XP.... possibly drivers? I'm stuck.

to follow up on my previous posting.... I've now narrowed it down to CDs not loading.
I have yet to test which CDs thoroughly, but I can tell you that CD-r and music CDs don't work, and that all bought and original software CDs don't work.

I called apple support, and the guy told me it was most likely the mirror for CD reading, as there is a separate mirror for DVD reading. That would explain DVDs working and CDs not.
He told me the only fix is to bring it into Apple for service. I am not impressed...
Harware issues like these keep OSX out of offices. My new iMac is an office machine, and I got it after my Powerbook logic board just died after only 2 years. How do you think my office manager feels about buying more Apple systems for our staff NOW???
Whatever Apple is doing needs rethinking. I used to be so proud of you guys.... now iPhone tech support. Get your computers working please. The fluffy stuff can wait but the professionals CAN'T.

I hope folks are still checking in on this thread. I'm having similar problem - auto ejects DVDs and data CDs, but accepts music CDs - and the drive whirs, then ejects w/o displaying any message or the discs icon. I tried to trash the CD drive-specific preference but I'm not sure which one to trash (I don't have "com.apply.finder.plist" in my preferences file). I was able to start up from my hardware test CD and ran the test, but I don't think it specifically checked the CD drive. Our eMac is at least four years old. How can I know with certainty that there is a problem with the drive itself?

Same problem...I bought an iMac about a month ago but hadn't tried out the CD/DVD drive as the computer was being used to exhibit an HD video. Yesterday we finally moved the machine into our administrative offices and attempted to transfer files from some DVDS....and the funny thing is that some CDs work, others don't, same with DVDs.

I called the mac store and they said the drive is probably defective and that they would repair it in a couple of days. I also just had a logic board disaster on my powerbook which replaced an ibook that died within a year due to motherboard isues. I just convinced my father, a die hard PC user, to buy a powerbook which also died within less than two years. Well designed? Yes. Well built? Definitely not.
