cd/dvd-rom drive not working

hi, i have a problem with my dvd-rom drive. it is a slot loading drive, whenever i put in a cd or dvd, it accepts it, attempts to read it (i can hear it working) but nothing ever shows up and about 3 minutes later, it ejects the disc. i had put 2 cds onto my itunes, and when i attempted the 3rd, this kept happening, i attempted to put in many other cd's and dvd's but now none of them work. has anyone else had this problem?

I am having the same type of problem with my cd/dvd drive. I put in a cd and it may run for a minute or two, but then stops and you can hear the drive spinning, stopping, then spinning again. Incessantly...... The cd doesn't show on the desktop or in i-tunes, either. I have to eject it through the Finder. Some cd's won't do anything, they just get spit back out. Has anyone found a resolution to this? My MacBook is only a couple of months old, but I live 4 hours from the nearest Apple Store and have heard lots of bad stories about shipping it off for repair. I'm fairly new to MacBook's and would really appreciate any help! Thanks!

Well, I now have the same symptoms as described in this discussion group. I'd put the CD in the superdrive for iTunes to burn, the computer accepts it, makes it's whirring noise (louder than a couple days ago), nothing comes on screen that says its able to read it, and around a minute or two it ejects the CD.

These larger 24inch iMacs are NOT the easiest to lug over to the Apple store, especially if taking mass transit! I have not found any solutions described here that works ...short of apple support.

I am a rather tidy and tech savvy person. No dirty CDs, no warped CDs, no inappropriate force to the drive, etc. Based on the number of similar postings, HAS APPLE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS AS A DRIVE DEFECT YET?

My iMac is one week old, and since day one did not read any cd media, tried music cd's(originals) tried data cd's blank cd's, none of them worked, just spins for half a minute or so, and then spits it out, but if a dvd is inserted no matter wich brand or kind just works fine. Hope Apple is looking into this issue, because right now have no way to put my cd collection into iTunes, and for me this is a major problem.

I also am having trouble with the drive in my iMac Intel 1.8 17". It will read or burn CD's, read DVD's but when I put a blank DVD in to burn from iDVD it ejects it after 1-2 minutes. I am using Sony DVD-R discs which work fine in my other Superdrive Macs. I did use it to burn a Ridata Dual layer disk, which worked, several weeks ago. I made sure the Prefs file for iDVD said single layer DVD as well as the System Prefs for CD/DVD. Repaired disk permissions and reset PRAM as others have suggested.

Just got my new iMac out of the box TONIGHT! And I'm right with you all...not a **** thing happens when I put a disc in the slot drive...won't play a DVD, won't recognize new software CD-Roms, won't see a CD-R or a DVD-R!!!!!!
WHAT GIVES!!!????
Some of these posts are from April! Apple seems to being doing nothing about it? Is this a firmware fix or do I need a new drive?

I too have discovered that my iMac drive isn't cooperating. I've loaded in lots of stuff to my iTunes but recently it won't read or burn anything. It started off with a couple failures at burning but would then burn after a few tries. Now after 20 tries, nothing happens. It says "checking media" and then gives up. I try to load in an official CD or DVD and nothing, just kicks out the disc after a couple minutes of whirring. What gives?

Well...I took it to the certified Mac repair folks in my town and sure enough..faulty drive.
So apparently some of them work for a while out of the box while others are DOA.
No other complaints with the machine as of yet.
I connected a firewire drive in the meantime to load software. I've been running Final Cut Pro on it with great results. Not once has it hung up or given me the spinning color wheel of death. It's been great- faster than my dual 2.5 powerpc tower at work!!

I have a very similar problem except that when I insert a blank DVD:
- I do not get an icon on the desktop
- it does not appear in the finder
- it keeps on spinning nonstop,
- the drives tries to eject the DVD (I tried ejecting it by the eject button on my keyboard), but fails

I even turned off my Imac, waited 10 minutes to reboot and it is still spinning.

How do I eject this DVD from the drive !

Hello all

Check your CD & DVD settings! Go to: System Preferences / CDs & DVDs.
When inserting blank CDs or DVDs set these to "Ask what to do"
When inserting music CD set to "Open iTunes"
When inserting picture CD set to "Open iPhoto"
When inserting video DVD set to "Open DVD Player"
If you are still having problems, try the Hardware Test in the link below.
