What OS X version have you got? Go to > About this Mac and copy Version. iTunes 10.7 or later is required for your device. Snow Leopard was released on 2009, and your OS X version hasn't got any support, so it's time to upgrade

Snow Leopard was released over three years ago. It costs $20.
I don't consider budgeting an additional 50¢ a month for a much more capable operating system amounts to being "extremely ripped off" but to each his own.
