What exactly do you mean by your "Mac is unresponsive"?  Do you mean it won't power On at all?  Or it powers on but you get a distorted screen image?  Or?

    Hope this helps

The following happens when I turn on my iMac

    Five thick vertical lines appear.

Behind these lines is the Grey Apple Logo

    The cog wheel appears

After a minute or so the display goes white

    It is thus unresponsive

Each time I power up the iMac the vertical lines change colour.

Apple support pages advise to upgrade graphics card to Firmware 2

    Hence my question

I hope this answer gives a clearer explanation

    Thanks for your interest

You have a bad hardware problem and No update will fix it. Take it to an Apple Genius Bar and have it fixed.
