Q: What is the new Caching Service and how is it used?

OS X server 2.2 presents the new Caching Service. It looks like a way to cache apps, software updates and other Internet requests.

However, no information on how to use / configure it. The help files don't exist on it yet.

Since I have multiple Macs and iOS devices at home, I'd sure be happy to be able to cache apps and updates efficiently, ... if this is what it does!

  • Does anybody know what this tool really does? Please explain technically.
  • If it does allow to cache iOS apps, how is it configured on my network so that my iOS devices can "see" this caching? Must a proxy be configured?
  • How is this different than the "Software Update" service?

Many thanks!
