My Mac Book pro cannot be shut down. Safari and Finder do not react and cannot be closed.

Press Option, Command and Esc keys and close Finder and Safari

Another way of dealing with such situations is to open ACTIVITY MONITOR, selecting the offending application and clicking on the 'Quit Process' icon.
