.wmv Movie won't play in PowerPoint in slideshow mode

On iMac G4, OS 10.4.latest

I have installed the flip4mac tools.
.wmv files play in Quicktime ok.
I have a PowerPoint presentation using the .wmv movies.
In "slide view" or "normal view", the movies will play by double-clicking the movie object (poster frame) on the slide.
In "slide show" mode, the audio of the .wmv plays automatically, as expected, but the video does not play. No amount of clicking on the movie object gets the video to play.

(aside - they don't play on my MacBook in PowerPoint in any mode, even though they play independently in QuickTime via Popwire WMV components)

What version of PPT are you using? I am using PPT 2004 and it will not allow me to import .wmv files at all. I am told that .avi and .mpg formats will work best for cross platfom issues, but I have been unable to find any software that will correctly convert the videos. I have QT Pro7 (it drops the audio when converting to .avi) and am considering buyng the Flip4Mac WMV Studio, but I don't have any definate answers yet.

Here's what Flip4Mac's support FAQ says about PowerPoint; hope it helps:

How do I import WMV files into PowerPoint?

To import WMV files into PowerPoint, open the WMV video in QuickTime Pro. Select File/Save and save as a reference movie. Because no actual conversion is necessary with reference movies, this is a very quick process. Then insert the .mov file into your PowerPoint presentation and proceed as usual. Although it is an extra step, it can be done very quickly and will make it possible to use WMV files in your PowerPoint presentation.
