So, my presonal hotspot disappeared while I was travelling over the holidays.. Not sure if it was related to shuffling different local sim cards in/out depending on country I was in..   Seems there are at least 2 settings that control this.. I just found the one that made it disappear from the top level Gneral Settings..

So on needs to first go into Settings->General-> Cellular->Personal HotSpot, and there one needs to enable it, and select media to share over, as well as the password..   Once that is done, Personal Hotspot then shows up at the top level of the settings page...

    Hello Hooishengjie,

You have to be on a carrier which supports Personal Hotspot on one of the carrier's plan.

The carrier might have even disabled it by default.

Our recommendation is that you take the iPhone to your phone store and get it enabled.

Hi, just to add on to the solutions above. my personal hotspot was missing in general settings > network.

I had to go to cellular data network > and under internet tethering apn i entered internet. Once i did that personal hotspot appeared on the previous settings page and i was able to connect my pc to my Iphone 4s. I guess all that reseting your network settings does is it reconfigures your apn settings and that is why it sometimes also works.

If nothing works out for you, go to Settings - General - Rest - Reset Network Settings..

Your phone will restart and will have hotspot and will work properly...

On my iPhone 5 I had to go to Settings/General/Mobile Data/ Personal Hotspot and turn it on. It will now be activated and appear in the settings menu. Hope that helps.

Shoot!  I tried your method but it doesn't work.  I'm trying to avoid resetting the entire phone if I can.

Personal hotspot via USB worked perfectly until 2 days ago.  Now I can only connect via Wi-Fi.  And the cable is not bad -- I tested two different cables and iTunes always recognizes that the phone is plugged in, but the Network Preferences still tells me that it's not plugged in.  Arrgghhh!!!!

Yes, I followed your sequence to do the reset.  Still no connection via USB and the phone briefly told me that I had 2 hotspot connections!  I've got it plugged in, but I have to use Wi-Fi instead.

I have finally found a solution that works for me.

To use my iphone (4s) as a hotspot and connect to my ipad (3) :

ipad settings: Cell Data OFF Wifi OFF Bluetooth ON.

iphone settings: Cell Data ON. Bluetooth ON. Personal hotspot ON. Wifi OFF (in that order)

I can connect the ipad to the iphone's hotspot using bluetooth and it works with no interruptions.

I am able to close down all apps on my iphone (including settings) and turn off the screen. The hotspot keeps broadcasting a signal.

A bit of a pain, but it works every time for me and has never disconnected.

Too bad Apple can't seem to come up with a fix!!
