My Macbook pro with faulty nvidia gt 8600m gt gpu failed 4.5 years after purchase and is not covered. I still find it surprising since apple should have done a recall knowing they sold a faulty product. On major purchases most companies do a recall since the product is expected to be used beyond warranty period.

While I sort of understand this, that perhaps they don't want an "official" presence I would certainly hope some of the software engineers and hardware engineers take a read every now and then.
