Macs and Scsi

My problem conversion was a new G5 dual core 2.3 with older scsi Epson Expression 1600 flatbed and Polaroid 4000 slide scanners. The ATTO express PCI card is ~$450 with new LaserSoft software D~$400 is too much. I tried a Ratoc firewire/ultra scsi converter (FR1SX) ~$90. Connected the Ratoc to 400 firewire port on the G5, used internal termination on Epson, and Epson scan software that did not work previously with firewire on my old G4 dual 500. Turned on scanner, Ratoc light went on, turned on G5, started Epson scan and all looks go. I do not have to use Twain with Photoshop but can scan alone with Epson. I will also try Hamrick VueScan later for the Polaroid scanner. Also the speed of the Ratoc seemed like the old scsi --fast!!!!!!! Yes, SCSI still works great.

Would a USB-to-SCSI adapter work for your EMu? It works okay for my Zip drive. I doubt that the sampler requires real high performance.

When I bought my G4, I had Apple install SCSI. It was nice... a dual-channel Ultra160-LVD card that I could add external drives to.

But SCSI hardware is so expensive that I can't really justify it for my next computer. Anyway, SATA technology has pretty much caught up to SCSI performance in terms of what any personal desktop user would require.

I have 6 computers, with a SCSI interface card being in most of them. Most people that edit video for a living still use it & it is very viable. Fibre is where we all would like to be but that will come with time & money. The biggest help I can offer here is that you should purchase an ATTO card if you are getting a new card. They make a great product & most of us professionals use it. Best of luck to you.

I have G4 tower and a Nikon LS 2000 scanner that I use with OS 9. I recently had a new harddrive put in, computer crashed. Now the scanner is not being recognized in the system profiler. When they put in the new harddrive they transferred my data and software to the new drive. Nikon doesn't have any drivers for me to download to use with OS X. Help!

jdlit, You might try looking at the silverscan software (scanhelp.com) to run your scanner. I know they support both my Epson 10000GT, and my old HP scanjet 3c, and the controls are FAR better than either of those scanners had to begin with. I'm going to try the Firewire adaptor on my scanners, as my old 7500 just bit the dust...
