unable to power off iPod Video, and no sound through headphones

I can no longer get sound to come through the headphones on my iPod Video (Original 5th Generation). Also, actually powering down the iPod does not work either. The screen obviously turns off, but it just goes straight back to the screen that it was on as soon as you try to turn it back on again....and every other button works too to turn the screen back on too.

It does, however, still play music through my iHome Alarm Clock.

Any suggestions?
