I just got an iPod touch 1st gen and can not figure out how to put apps on it. I have reset all the settings and updated all software but am clueless. It does not even have an app store app on the screen....

You need at least iOS 2.X for apps. The last update for the 1G is 3.1.3 that you get there.

However, there are not that many apps that work with the 1G.
To find your version go to Settings>General>About>Version.
