unable to upgrade my itunes software

Any time I'm asked to upgrade itunes, I continually receive an error message informing me that I need to manually install the upgrade. After trying to manually install the upgrade I still receive an error. I'm running in Window Vista and until recently have been able to upgrade w/o problems. Please help.
