what IOS version should I have for my iphone 3GS

What version IOS should I be running on my IPhone 3GS? My current version is 4.3.5 which runs fine. I wanted to update it to IOS 5 because some apps are requiring it for their updates but I don't want the IOS update to slow my phone down any or make it crash. I know its probably time for me to purchase the new IPhone but its just not an option for me at this time. So what is your opinion do I update to IOS 5 or 6 or leave it be?
