how do i move a movie i have on dvd on my iMac to itunes so i can put it on my iPad to watch

If you mean a commercial DVD, we can't help you.

If you mean home movies on a DVD, handbrake.

I'm going to pretend your using a DVD with home movies on it. The first step is to get the movies from the DVD onto your mac, the second step is into iTunes. There is a handy program called "Handbreak", that program does step 1 and 2 all in one go. It will copy everything from the DVD, chapters and all, and place it right into iTunes. Once thats done you should be able to simply connect your device, and sync.
