Correct Wallstreet 256mb module? (for 512mb total)

Im looking to up the memory in my Wallstreet from the stock 192mb to the max 512mb. I understand I will need two 256mb low profile PC100 144pin memory modules to acheive this.
However looking at various memory modules I can see that some have 4 "black blocks" on the module, while others have 8 "blocks" on them.
I can remember reading a post that said if the wrong type is fitted, the Wallstreet will not "see" the extra memory.
Which is the correct type for the Wallstreet?

John,

You only require a low-profile for the lower slot; upper slot can take a standard height or low-profile. Supposedly you want the 8 blocks for 256MB memory modules, but I would stay with a good memory vendor for the correct item.

The black blocks are memory chips. The memory controller in the wallstreet cannot use memory banks larger than 128MB. While it is possible to make two bank 256MB modules with 8 chips, 16 chips will guarantee two banks. Most memory modules are now low profile.

Will the 16 chips be laid out 8 per side?

Is there any way to tell if an 8 chip memory module is laid out as 128MB memory banks?

It would be 8 on a side. That is how I knew that the module that came with my PB Ti 500 would work in the lower slot of my wallstreet.
pc100 or pc133 both should work.

Hi,

Sorry to hijack the thread. I am on the point of adding some ram to my wallstreet which currently has 192MB of RAM. I havent looked but am guessing that this is 128MB in the top slot and 64 mb in the low profile bottom slot.

Can I get a 256MB low profile upgrade to take the beast up to 384Mb? Looking at OWC this is only 43 USD, and is worth the gamble.

Matt,

A low-profile 256 in the bottom and your 128 in the top should work just fine. Since you are shopping at the OWC site, and just to confirm your choice, it is the OWC100SO256168L.

Just following up on this, have now been rocking along with 384Mb for a couple of weeks. Was a little scary installing the lower 256Mb but otherwise no problem.

Only major lags now seem to be dealing with large amounts of pictures or video which I suspect is due to the aged video card on the wallstreet and the lack of hardware acceleration for it under os x.

Lower profile are smaller than the high one, just take your processor out it's simple lift it up gently!

You will understand just by looking at the picture!

Ps: it's true that for that matter it's better looking at good resellers as many people will sell without knowledge and you'll end up with the wrong one and sometimes very expensive.
