macbook stymied at startup

Our macbook started all at once when turning on to continue to display the grey apple icon and the small circle that shows it is loading and staying stuck at this point. I've let it go for over 45 mintues and no final bootup. I've done the disk repair in the disk utility section and I've even reloaded the Operating System and still the same results. Not sure what my next step should be.
