How do I get the trash can icon to appear in top line toolbar of mail. Right now I cannot delete, only file or archive?

I assume that it's a gmail account - you can change whether a trashcan appears instead of an archive icon by selecting the account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and changing Archive Messages to 'off ' for it : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4207
