can't empty trash! "being used by another task"

i'm trying to empty my trash and all i get is this message. i went into finder and the only thing under devices in my mac.



“Trash” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.


please help

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Goto Finder > Help > type in Trash...


From Finder Help Trash...


" Empty the Trash


Command (⌘)-Shift-Delete


Empty the Trash without any warning or when it contains locked files


Command (⌘)-Shift-Option-Delete


Hold down the Option key, and then choose Finder > Empty Trash "
