unknown error when signing into mac app store

Greetings,

We created an iD using I-tunes, as the mac-app store's link would not surface. So, after setting up an ID using an email address (ID) and password, we attempted to log into the mac app store and so far we get an 'unkown error' when attempting to sign in. Any help would be appreciated.
