My Macbook Pro will NOT recognize the wireless keyboard, but it does sync with the trackpad???

How do I get my 2 year old Macbook Pro to recognize my new wireless keyboard? It recognizes the new trackpad but not the keyboard!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2 year old
