Used Mini DisplayPort to HDMI on TV, picture great, sound on Macbook but not on TV. Had to run 3.5mm from macbook to stereo. Why? What can I adjust in preferences to make audio work?

I'd be happy to help.

Go to system preferences. Once you are there, click on the panel that says "Sound":

User uploaded file then click on the button that says "Output":

User uploaded file

then plug the HDMI in, and it should pop up here:User uploaded file

Make sure the HDMI option is selected.
