I'm trying to figure this out too. Everything in this UI is so stupidly difficult to navigate and figure out!  You need to be a programmer to figure it out!  This iTunes 11 looks so Windows "esk" and it is a huge step (JUMP) back Apple.  I can't even find the songs I just downloaded to put into specific folders I have.  Apple, you need to fix this garbage ASAP!  If it wasn't broke then don't fix it!  Bring back iTunes 10.7!

I think the item you want when  in a playlist is in the top menu

View, View options  The a popup box appears where you can select which columns you want to appear. At the top is a Sort by drop down box with the options of

    Manual Order

    Album

    Artist

These choices are determined by what columns you show

Thanks. That's helpful but doesn't solve what I'm trying to do. In previous versions of iTune it was very simple to re-arrange the order of my songs in a playlist. If I wanted the 10th song to play in 6th position I simply clicked on it, held it, dragged it to the desired position and dropped it. You can't seem to do this anymore. I think that *****.

When you are viewing a playlist, select View Options from the View menu. The at the top you'll see "Sort By". Chooose "Manual". and you can drag your songs into your own order.

Wow....I just spent the night sorting 5 hours worth of music in to a very specific order for a project. Upon checking the order, I didn't like where a particular song sat and decided to move it, which I suddenly couldnt (I admit to operator error, random quick key, etc) but could not for the life of me, figure out what i did wrong to suddenly no longer be able to move tracks....So, I came here to the forums, started monkeying around with sorting and now everything is completely out of order and I can't get it back to where I started. As soon as I checked and unchecked "manual" all **** broke lose......does this have to be so hard apple?....I'm basically trying to make a mix tape for gods sake....It was easier with vinyl and a casette player. I'm glad so many of you are getting paid to "expand" on these programs that don't need advanced features....i need to start looking for a different music managemant program....

I'm trying to do the same thing!  I have my music is reverse manual order (I add new songs, they go to the top).  It was just fine until about two days ago when I accidentally opened up iTunes and it re-synced my music.  Now everything is backwards!

To add insult to injury, it's not backwards, it just automatically sorts by artists.  There seems to be nothing I can do about it.

Select the PL - then select the column of the far left - with the numbers - make that the active choice and you can drag tunes to what order you want. Nothing has changed - this is the way iTunes has worked for many of the previous versions.

Oh, I get it. Click on the only column that doesn't have a label. That's totally intuitive.
