The mail partially opens for a second and then crashes. I see some suggestions for deleting the mail program but when I go to Settings the Mail, Calendar and Contact button won't open.
try settings>general>reset>reset all settings.
after that, you can force quit any apps still open by double tapping your home button, press and hold on any app and they will all start jiggling, press the minus sign on everything to close them.
then try going to mail, or settings>mail contacts and calendars.
Thanks, but it did not solve the issue. When I press the Mail icon it will flash a blank screen for a second or two and then crash. When I go to Settings and press Mail, Contacts, Calendars the button turns blue for a second and then crashes. the phone is also not closing down. It stays lit until I press the button on the edge of the phone.

yes If resetting all settings did not work, your only other option is to restore as new.
Did you manage to fix this? I am having the EXACT same issue on the iPhone 5. I did a restore, and restored it from a backup and same issue. Any luck?
I, too, cannot receive mail on my 4s anymore. I get a prompt which says,"Cannot Get Mail. the mail server , imap.gmail.com is not responding. Check your settings ""
However I've changed nothing in my settings. The Internet connection is fine too . I cannot solve this. How r u making out?
OK!!! 🙂 After hrs of exhaustive research, I finally, SIMPLY, deleted my gmail acc't from my iphone and then re entered all the SAME information as if I were opening a "new" gmail acc't and voila......problem solved. And I lost no emails in the process.

However, if the member posting this and I are on the same page, we cannot even go into setting to DELETE the account in the first place... When I click the mail thing in settings... It just crashes and kicks me out..
I am sorry that I did not recognize that problem. Obviously, my solution does not help u at all!😐
After trying multiple suggested solutions where nothing corrected the problem, I ultimately had to reset to factory settings. I lost my text messages but was able to restore everything else.
I still have not been able to open mail preferences on my iphone 4s so I can't even delete or add accounts. I reset everything (after trying various soft resets), started all over again as a new phone and updated the IOS but still can't open mail settings or the mail app. Prior to the "fix" for the Excess exchange account activity related to calendar, I reported the problem and have have gotten zero responses. Although I was using gmail exchange accounts for google apps for education, I did NOT have a problem with calendar, just mail. My calendars still sync just fine, but have resorted to using gmail app and yahoo mail app to get my various mail accounts on my phone. I know this doesn't help you but maybe someone will see a pattern here.
