i need to download IOS 5.1 on my ipad but cannot update software as this option is not in my general settings on my ipad2. I cannot access the laptop that my itunes account was originally set up on, so how can I do this?

If you are currently running version of iOS earlier that 5, the ONLY way to update the OS is by synching with iTunes on a computer. Direct WiFi synching is not available before 5.
Make a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple Store and have them do it for you if you do not have access to a computer. Over-the-air updating was not added until iOS 5.x. Also, your iPad will be updated to 6.0.1, not 5.1.1.
