If you have an iPhone 3G, you can not upgrade beyond iOS 4.2.1.

Correct, if you have an iPhone 3G, you will not see that option. It is only avaialble after the upgrade to iOS 5.

In that case you may or may not be able to upgrade. But until you are willing to give us some information as to what you have, there isn't much we can do.
