Won't let me install 1.3.1

I recently upgraded my son's iMac DV (A G3 processor) to OS X 10.3.9. Was having trouble launching Safari 1.2. It would start to launch and then quit. I thought I need an upgrade so I downloaded 1.3.1, which I need before I can get 1.3.2. When I try to install the 1.3.1 I get a message that says "You cannot install this software on this volume. This system cannot use this software." Why not? I'm running 10.3.9. What do I need to do?

Hi Jamie,

I tried reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo, and now even Safari 1.2 won't work for me.

The 10.3.9 Combo Update should have installed Safari 1.3 - it's part of the package. You still have Safari 1.2? Having applied the combo update, you are still unable to install the Safari updates? Do they not show up in Software Update?

I checked the version number by typing Apple-i after highlighting the application icon. Maybe this will chronology will help"

1) Machine -- iMac DV (G3) w/ slot loading drive -- was running OS 9.2. I tried to upgrade it to 10.3 with Panther discs. It told me I needed a firmware update, which I installed, then upgraded from the disc.

2) I then upgraded further with with a 10.3.9 Combo download, which installed Safari 1.3. However, when I double-click the Safari icon, it won't open. Nor will it allow me to upgrade to 1.3.1 or 1.3.2.

3) I then downloaded Safari 1.2 again and re-installed that. That seemed to work and at least allowed me to get on the Web. But now, I'm back at version 1.2.

I repeated steps 2 and 3 twice with the same result: Safari won't open until I re-install 1.2.

I did the same thing to my daughter's iMac G3 and it all went fine. Only difference was, I was upgrading her from OS 10.2.8 and when I did, it did not ask me for a firmware update.

Now, after reading more in this forum. I'm not so sure I even won't 1.3 on the iMac DV, as others seem to be having a variety of problems. I mean, I want it to be current, but I wan't it to work too. Any suggestions?

Well, this is a help forum remember so you're bound to see lots of problems 🙂

You mentioned earlier that Safari 1.3 quits after you try to start it. Can you post the crash log here for us to take a look at? You can obtain the crash report text by clicking the (Report...) button in the Unexpectedly Quit window and then copying and pasting the text here.

Hi Jamie,

Firstly, we have to establish if it's a account- or system-specific issue. Try setting up a new user account (System Preferences > Accounts > [+]) and using Safari in that.

User-specific Issue:
If it works fine then log back in to your original user account and perform the following general maintenance steps.

i) trashing ~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.Safari.plist
ii) trashing ~/Library/Caches/ Safari/
iii) moving ~/Library/ Safari/ to your desktop.

Additionally, move the following two folders to your desktop if they exist. '~/Library/ InputManagers/' and '~/Library/ Internet Plug-ins/'.

It might also be useful to take a look in '~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ Safari.crash.log' to see if the crashes are being reported successfully. If so, copy and paste the most recent entry for us to have a look through.

System-specific Issue:
If, however, Safari fails to launch in the new user account, then try moving the following two folders to the desktop if they exist. 'HD/Library/ InputManagers/' and 'HD/Library/ Internet Plug-ins/'. Check to see if Safari is working now.

If it still fails to launch, then I would suggest attempting an 'Archive & Install' from your Panther DVD. It's a drastic step and I would suggest holding out for more advice from the other users before deciding to attempt it.

I tried both suggestions, neither one worked. Safari wouldn't start under a new account so I didn't try removing the files you suggested. As for the system solution, I couldn't find an InputManagers folder and I moved the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the desktop. Still didn't work.

Would there be any benefit to trying to re-install the whole system again, and if so, is there a particular way I should do it?

Jamie,

Try this, Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities) Choose your hard drives name, and click on the button that says Verify Disk Permissions, let it run, if it shows any permissions that are bad, click on the button that says Repair Disk Permissions, also let it run. If that doen't work then you have no other choice then to start from scratch. You could try what is called an "Install in Place" what that does is install anything that is missing or corrupt and installs or re-installs the things that are bad. Try to repair the permissions first before doing the "Install in Place."

Hope this Helps.

Hi Jamie,

Would there be any benefit to trying to re-install the whole system again, ...

Like most all applications that run under Mac OS X, there are dependencies in the background which once gone awry, are hard to troubleshoot and pin-point. I think one of the largest benefits of reinstalling the system would be in knowing that things will necessarily be working as they should from the get go.

That said, the steps you undertook to bring the computer up to date seem innocuous enough to me. I find it surprising that you even have problems with applications refusing to behave. Is there content on the HD which you might want to save? Or did you wipe the disk clean when performing the ugprade from OS 9.2?

... and if so, is there a particular way I should do it?

If you wish to preserve the contents of the user's home folder, then you should start up from the Panther DVD and perform an 'Archive & Install', when given a choice of installation options. If not, then I would go with 'Erase & Install'. But like I said, it's a drastic step. Perhaps in time, someone might think up a solution to your present problem.

OK, do we have any more suggestions? I went the drastic route and performed a complete Erase & Install. It then automtically went into Software Update and I updated everything it recommended, including a fresh download of the 10.3.9 Combo.

After that was installed, I STILL couldn't open Safari 1.3. I downloaded the updates, and this time, at least, it would let me update 1.3 to 1.3.1 and then 1.3.2, but it still won't open when I double-click the icon, either in the dock or in the Applications folder.

I've repaired permissions. Nothing. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
