That is Lion. You need Mountain Lion or 10.8 and to get Mountain Lion you need to purchase it through the Mac App Store. Use the search function and you will find a lot of guides on upgrading your operating system.
HI,
Have you, in the past, separated items in the Applications Folder into subfolder ?
For instance: Picture editing apps or even Apple iApps.
Do you have one for Messaging apps ?
If this was done in Mountain Lion and then you Upgraded the Messages will have missed this upgrade.
If you did this in Lion and jumped to Mavericks then iChat may still exists in a sub folder and Messages will not be on there.

Hi,
If you did put it in a separate folder then move it back to Applications then Reinstall the OS (which will includes various Apple Apps.)
If you deleted iChat then I would use Time Machine and put back iChat then Reinstall.

In your Applications folder. Drag it to the dock if you like.
Cheers

But it isn't in my applications folder, I have looked there. All I see is iChat, but not Messages....Do I need to reinstall Mountain Lion?
You don't have Mountain Lion installed you have Lion. Go to the Apple in then menu and choose About This Mac. What does it say there, 10.8.x or 10.7.x?
It says Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
Edit - too slow posting.
OH! My bad 😟 Thank you!!
I have OS X 10.9.2 but I can't find Messages in Launchpad. I'm 68 and need specific instructions on how to find it.
Its not in the Dock or the Applications folder.
I may have done that…I went to One-to-One for 3 years and at that time I didn’t want to do Messaging so the tech probably did something with the app.
Is there a way to fix it now?
