I'm trying to free up memory on my iPad 1 and am trying to delete photos but it won't even let me--the delete button never lights up for me to select it--what am I doing wrong?

Photos that were taken with the iPad (or any photos in the camera roll or saved album) can be deleted right on the iPad. Tap the trash can icon in the top right corner if you are viewing the photo in full screen, or if you are viewing as thumbnails - tap the arrow in the upper right corner - tap the photos that you want to delete and then tap - Delete.
Photos that were synced from your computer using iTunes can only be deleted by de-selecting them from the folder from where they were synced - and then re-syncing.
You say that the red delete button doesn't light up, so I assume that you are seeing the delete button which means that you are trying to delete the photos from the saved album. The delete button "lights up" after you tap the edit button and after you select at least one photo to delete.
If you really are not seeing the red delete button at all, you are trying to delete synced photos. You can only delete synced photos by deselecting them in iTunes and then syncing to remove them. Its the reverse process of how you got them onto the iPad in the first place. Since you have the iPad original model, you don't have a camera and you would only have saved photos in the saved album, so you are talking about synced photos.
Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Photos Tab on the right.
Uncheck all of the photos or sub folders in the photos folder that you want to delete from the iPad
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
Cheers, Tom 😉
