Apple mail on iphone not marked as read

I am using an iPhone 4s with my Gmail account. I have the Gmail app installed in addition to the Apple Mail. I am configured for IMAP through the preset provide for Google mail.

My messages sync but all of my messages in Apple Mail always display as "unread" (bold). If I look at a message and return to the inbox, it still looks unread. If I read a message in the Gmail app it automatically displays as having been read, but this never translates over to the Apple Mail.

Any suggestions on how to get to the two to dispaly re/unread messages in sync?
